I want to know how many overseas doctors from India are complacent(pleased) in UK . Does all the overseas docs are satisfied financially and professionally? please I am an Indian doc came to UK with lot of anticipation but in my case it was a futile effort .
So I want a honest answer for the above question.......................
please I welcome all the overseas docs to comment on this argument .

Thank you

hi senior AIPPG,

I am an overseas doctor who came 3.5 years ago to the UK, full of hope and anticipation, i was initially shocked when i witnessed the misery and the harsh conditions plabbers suffer in Eastham, then, when i sat the PLAB test i couldn't believe my eyes when i saw the huge number of candidates sitting the exam, i was at the front row and with no exaggeration there was no way for me to recognise my friend who was sitting in the last row, after passing both PLABs and going through the same misery and hardship every PLABBER went through, i had to join ranks with the post plab unemployed doctors (PPUD), and start the long journey of application forms for my first post in the UK, i was greatly disheartened by the difficulty in getting my first post in the UK, especially that i didn't have any experience which was a must to get an SHO job, meanwhile, i had to do some clinical attachments which were extremely and unbelievably difficult to get, and during which i felt in the heart what it means to be a nuisance, a person that nobody misses, a mere hurdle to anybody's work, i was so disheartened and depressed, financially pressurised and emotionally abused, that my consultant started to get irritated when he sees me, being so negative and withdrawn myself, (which is something i still can't forgive him for, because being in such a situation you would expect your consultant to offer you a helping hand, or at least an emotional support),... i was exceptionally lucky that i didn't do an internship in my home country and ironically, experience turned into a curse on its holders, and i was selected, among thousands of my colleague doctors, to a 2 years foundation programme, i then thought, that's it, i hit luck hard, and i'm sorted forever, how fool i was, anyway, now i'm 1.5 months away from finishing my foundation training, and i have not been shortlisted even once for an ST post, all my colleagues have been shortlisted except me, and i experienced first hand what it means to be an overseas doctor graduating from a University that no body knows,... i'm again disheartened by the current situation and i feel that i'm lost in the system, i'm applying for trust grade and fellows jobs in surgery and i'm not getting even these,.... not knowing what comes next is the worst thing that can happen to any doctor (given the amount of effort and hard work he invests in his career)...

to sum up, the road to specialty training in the UK, is so tortuous, riddled with hurdles, failures, misery, isolation, depression, uncertainty, financial insecurity, family worries, anger, frustration, envy, and so many other tragedies, you need to be extremely hard working, know how to exploit your effort, and more importantly you should have a divine support...

i'm starting to believe my best friend who is an IT consultant now in the USA, when he said " you became a doctor because you are a failure, you cannot succeed in any other career"

it seems that i can't even succeed in medicine... Wink

anyway, i deeply apologise if my words are disheartening to the readers, i wrote them in a real low moment, i might change my views if i got an ST training post in the future,

keep up the hard work, and you never know, opportunities can come at any time...

Nice post! I still cant believe you guys are stuck in the uk still. I would advice you to jump on the bandwagon for australlia before the doors shut there totally aswell. I suffered a lot myself but now am happy in a rotational training post in australlia and my wife is in the same hospital aswell. So really guys get out of there if you can! all the best to everyone. No point in loosing hope but no point in running after something that is not there!

Dear livesimalsi ,
Your are right we should have done BE IT in India . Medicine field saturated even in Australia , NZ , USA every where . In australia Intially they will provide temporary work visa subsequently you need to sit for exit exams . They have stringent rules and conditions . after 3yrs Australia will produce enough doctors which they have to move to India for finding jobs. they have opened lot of medical colleges there.
USA residency is very tight one in 1000 applicants are getting residency based on your immigrant status like green card holder /PR. So How will the future for overseas docs for locum jobs and SHO jobs ???????????????????

I am an overseas doctor from India, came to UK in 2000, did PLAB, attachments, sho jobs, gp rotation..I am now a GP, earning roughly 80,000=00 pounds per year.
Iam busy and have no time to be depressed.
I visit this web site to see how lucky I am & sorted for life in comparison to many others who came at the same time or a couple of yrs later....
Oh not to mention my wife is a practicing GP too...
She earns about 70 to 75000=00 per year.
God bless!!

hey Guest..

it's really not about money, in fact money is the last issue on my agenda,

AS LONG AS I CAN LIVE A DECENT LIFE, i'm not bothered by money, in fact i dont need it, and i didn't come here to become a GP with all due respect, as it doesn't fulfill my ambitions, i came here to become a surgeon, and i understand all the struggle and the pain attached, nothing else will satisfy me, be it money, Gp, or any non surgical specialty even at the level of consultant.... i'm happy for you, and i hope you are satisfied...

thanks..

ha, ha, ha, it seems all previous PPUDs have got jobs and they are very busy earning lots of money, but if you want to know the truth then just go to East Ham - East London and see what PPUDs are doing there...hehehehe

now dont be dishearted by the guest post from above........lots of job and lots of money......IF you have the visa........give plab as soon as possible and come to the uk.......dont even think of anything else after graduation........more experience back home is counted as a disadvantage and negetive impact in getting the foundation posts........if you cant get anything else plenty of money to be earned by just locum itself........come on hurry up!

PostPosted: Thu Dec 25, 2008 6:36 am    Post subject: things getting better in some area

it is strange that because of the changing of attitudes of local grads and unwilling to do nights and more difficult jobs some specialisms are open to overseas.

For example surgery is no go - although plenty of staff grades got a number and become consultants that was pure luck . I have seen many local good graduates struggle in surgery and give up.

However in acute medicine and A&E there are plenty chances. I know people who have got numbbers and my consultant has said to me he will support me in getting a medical rotation at my current hospital.

So the message is if the overseas doctor is flexible and willing there is chances to progress but flexing is the key. You have to take chance where it comes.

This year will be better then last 2 years. Actually there is even short on surgical sho rotation but you would be very stupid to go down that road in this country.

UK is the best place for foreign/overseas people and SHO job in UK can make any Doctors millionaire.

As far as the work permit is concerned its a piece of cake as you can plan it something like "You work full time on student dependant visa" and your spouse can study 1 year and then apply for post study work permit.

For a fresh MBBS from India GBP3000 is not bad just on passing a simple PLAB exam.

We will make Britishers/EU citizens run out of britian/Europe now!!!Now a days war cannot be done with army or airforce. Its the workforce like us from India who will eat jobs and make these people loose their homeland.

Well..! If its only money that we care about, then perhaps this is a better place to be than home.
But at the end of the day,i measure life by many more things.
I miss family..home..our traditions..
What will happen to old parents at home?
It is not easy working in a different country. You never belong here. every day you are reminded you are an outsider. You really have to be to hard and thick not to see it.
Some of them are very nice but there are many more who are not.

Is it worth all the trouble??

australia is the most racist western country.it is both subtle and in the open.working there is very stressful as you are watched like a hawk and any small mistake is not defended at all.very racist country.beware.the institutions are all slanted towards whites.even the last pm had the nerve to say australia is a white christian country and others should fit in.he said thisknowing that colonial invaders wiped out millions of indigenous people.
