Question: Telecommuting (working for a company from home rather than in the office and communicating with the office by computer) is becoming more and more common. Discuss the advantages of telecommuting versus working in an office. Then indicate which you prefer and why.
Answer:
Telecommuting has become a common phenomenon since the massive development in the field of technology. In the recent years, a different method of working style has emerged called, 'telecommuting' unlike the traditional method of working i.e., going to office to work. In both, there are merits, as well as demerits. However, considering different aspects, I prefer Telecommuting to traditional method of working.
Talking about the first and foremost advantage of telecommuting that I have discovered is that it saves the most precious thing of our life i.e. 'Time'. In this busy world, when there is competition everywhere and there is scarcity of time due to lack of proper management of time, I think telecommuting would be the best option. It helps us in saving lots of time that will otherwise be wasted travelling back and forth from office. Moreover, the expenses will also be less as compared to working in a traditional manner. Since, we do not have to go to office; it saves our travel expenses as well.
Similarly, working at home gives us ample time to spend with our family members, which has become the major problem of the present world. Just because parents always have to hurry, early in the morning to reach office and return late at home exhausted. In such circumstances, even when parents wish to spend time with their children, they cannot do so. The outcome of it is visible in our society. These days, we find that the rate of juvenile delinquency has increased tremendously in the last few decades. Majority of the people around the world are of the opinion that it is all because parents do not have adequate time to spend with their children, which results in creating a big generation gap.
In addition to it, I think if everyone starts adopting telecommuting to traditional method of working then lots of space will be spared, which are unnecessarily occupied by large offices. In this present world, due to population explosion, when there is dearth of land, I think telecommuting will serve as a boon. The spaces, which are occupied by different offices can be used for public purposes such as building hospitals, parks, and so on. Apart from all the above mentioned benefits of telecommuting, there are several others as well such as, it helps in reducing the pollution also to some extend as less number of vehicles will be plying on roads.
To sum up, although there are some demerits of telecommuting as well such as, some professional may not be able to work properly at home due to lots of distraction at home. However, its advantages overshadow its demerits. Therefore, I strongly feel that Telecommuting is the best.
