A 30 year old single woman with a low IQ presents at her gynaecologist because she is worried she may be pregnant. She has not had a menstrual period for over 6 months. A pregnancy test is negative. Of note in her past history is that she had received chemotherapy for Hodgkin\'s lymphoma. Further investigations revealed low serum estrogen and high serum LH/FSH. Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis ?

    a) galactorrhea amenorrhea syndrome

    b) hypothalamic pituitary failure

    c) adrenal dysfunction

    d) ovarian failure

    e) anxiety neurosis

Ovarian failure maybe result from successful treatment of cancers (such as Hodgkin\'s disease) with radiation or chemotherapy. The younger the woman, the better the chance for return of ovarian function after chemotherapy. Radiation effects are dependent on exposure. Generally, a total of 800 rad will lead to permanent infertility
