BRCA1 is a human tumor suppressor gene
    is responsible for repairing DNA
BRCA1 is part of a complex that repairs double-strand breaks in DNA.

the official name (breast cancer 1, early onset) are maintained by the HGNC
    HUGO Gene Nomenclature Committee (HGNC)
    Human Genome Organisation (HUGO)

Certain variations of the BRCA1 gene lead to an increased risk for breast cancer as part of a hereditary breast-ovarian cancer syndrome

In addition to breast cancer, mutations in the BRCA1 gene also increase the risk of
    ovarian,
    fallopian tube, and
    prostate cancers. Moreover,
precancerous lesions (dysplasia) within the Fallopian tube have been linked to BRCA1 gene mutations.

Pathogenic mutations anywhere in a model pathway containing BRCA1 and BRCA2 greatly increase risks for
    a subset of leukemias and
    lymphomas.
