DNB : What a farce....

Discussion in 'DNB CET board - DipNB' started by Dr DNB, Jun 10, 2006.

    Dr DNB Guest

I had joined one of the premier hospitals, in DELHI, after clearing the DNB exams and the requisite interviews etc. in 2005.

During one year of my experience, I have come to know about the whole farce called DNB. I am detailing all the mishappenings i have faced over a period of one year which can almost drive anybody mad. I'm sure a lot of our DNB students like me are facing the same thing but are not coming out OPENLY because of the "BUREUCRATIC" attitude of NBE itself.

These private operators get themselves accredited to DNB and start these courses purely for commercial reasons rather than anything else. PROVIDING EDUCATION IS THE LAST THING IN THIER SCEME OF THINGS. They are not ever aware of the DNB guidelines to be followed.

They use us as RMOs' and make us do all kind of clerical work without any timetable. Whenever we talk about the course material or classes or anything related to education they ignore is very casually saying that you have to study on your own.

They keep their hospital understaffed with Residents, SR's, consultants etc. and flout all guidelines given to them by DNB. They are aware that since we are DNB students, we cannot leave until we finish our course, hence they keep exploiting us.

I would request those who are facing the same thing to come out here and lets make a forum to combat this injustice given to us.

I hope NBE will sit up one day and notice these glaring malpractices happening under its nose, in DELHI. GOD knows what happens in those institutions which are in far flung areas.

I wish NBE would wake up from its deep slumber to crack a whip on these commerial enterprises posing themselves as doing the most noble things on earth.

    AMEN

    Hi.....

You will do a big service to medical community by revealing the name(s) of those particular hospital(s).......

    thanx.

    Hello doctor,

I agree that there are always several black sheep & grey areas in every field, whether it is a large public sector hospital, or one belonging to private sector, or whether it is related to the course, either M.D/M.S, or DNB, in any subject, in any state of India.

This problem should be sorted out by the DNB board itself, by doing surprise visits to these institutions.

thanks for bringing this up. i have just given my dnb primary on jun 11. when i was researching abt which hospital to join, i was consistently adviced to join a teaching hospital or medical college for dnb. now that even colleges have started dnb courses, i think we would be best served by joining one of these rather than private hospitals.

when i was sorta going around town looking up hospitals offering dnb ortho, i came across a very strange practice. in one of the premier orthopedic hospitals here, the management was getting the 1st yr dnb residents to work as rmos and assist in general surgery procedures rather than ortho procedures. these poor guys work 12 hrs a day looking after the wards and doing clerking of patients. the classes are posted on the noticeboard but are not held at all. infact 2 of these residents were actually incharge of the general surgery ward.

i mean i agree with all this holistic surgical training, but this is ridiculous. when are these guys going to do ortho for heaven sake??

    i agree

the problems faced by DNB residents are many in number. The exploitations are numerous, the expectations are high. In some specialities it is 8 to 8pm job with no time to study , or do other activities, after all this effort your not sure that you will pass it or not. The BOARD is actually turned a blind eye to all these problems and choose to see what it wants to see only.

what do u suggest we do? maybe the media could be used to our advantage. but the flip side is that if we go public and nothing good comes out of it, then the chances of getting into a hospital here become dim.

    any suggestions?

  14. don't join for DNB

i have just competed my so called DNB training.it is foolish to join for DNB.

    the reasons are:

    - no DNB centre allows you to study, you are just bonded worker for 3 years.
    - nobody will pay u more than 5k.

    - absolutely no classes,no journals,no semonars.

    - i saw my thesis guide for the first time after 2 years for signature, who infact living in different country.
    - life will be really miscerable because no hospital cares for ur accommodation,FOOD ?????[/b]

  16. DNB

    Friends,

It appears that there are a lot of misunderstandings regarding DNB.
    Here are some clarifications:-

The working arrangement is naturally decided by the policy of the respective hospital, just as it is for M.D/M.S in any hospital in India.
A broad outline of the course curriculum & syllabus(including a logbook for procedures conducted), is given by DNB board, to each accredited hospital, which they are directed to follow religiously.

The DNB board has recently hiked the pay of the DNB residents, from the earlier pay of Rs.8,000-10,000/-pm, to the present pay of Rs.10,000-12000/-pm, for the 3 years of the course. As far as I know, the DNB Board pays for these residents, not the individual hospital itself.

Though the DNB exam is certainly tougher than M.D/M.S in the respective subject, its standard is very good. The exam is held at a centre different from the place where one has enrolled for DNB, with >50% of the examiners being outsiders. The DNB degree is equivalent to M.D/M.S.

i cleared my dnb final theory in medicine. many of my dnb colleagues in same & other brances also offered so many lakhs of ruppy in getting dnb seats.most of the hospitals are doing this buissness in shade.hospitals just want doctors for duties and for their shelfish intersts. they are least intersted in academics or teachers donot have time. candidates donot complain because they do not want to loose seat. i request dnb board to please do counselling after entrance test. i hope something will change in dnb.but when????????/

    DNB FLAWBACKS

    1) THERE IS NO COUNSELLING AFTER ENTRANCE TEST.VARIOUS HOSPITALS TAKE BENEFIT OF THIS. IN THE INTERVIEW THEY SELECT CANDIDATES, WHICH ARE HAVING INFLUENCE OR THEY ASK FOR LAKHS OF MONEY (WITHOUT GIVING ANY RECIPT) ALONG WITH THE TUTION FEES. AS I WAS A DNB STUDENT, I CAME TO KNOW FROM VARIOUS OTHER DNB STUDENTS OF DIFFERENT INSTITUTES THAT THIS IS HAPPENING IN MANY INSTITUTES WITHOUT COMING IN NOTICE OF THE NATIONAL BOARD.

    2) MANY A TIMES THESE HOSPITALS THEY SELECT CANDIDATES ONLY IF THEY HAVE WORKED IN THEIR OWN INSTITUTES FOR MANY MONTHS, AFTER CLEARING DNB. SO INTERVIEW IS JUST A EYE-WASH. FOR THEM BY DOING THIS THEY ARE JUST CHEATING THE CANDIDATES AND THE BOARD.

    3) AFTER THE STUDENT IS SELECTED, THE MAKE HIM TO WORK AS THE HOSPITAL WANTS. THESE INSTITUTES OR HOSPITALS DONOT FALLOW ANY GUIDELINES SET BY THE NATIONAL BOARD FOR ROTATION OF POSTINGS. I HAVE SEEN DNB CANDIDATES BEING PLACED IN VARIOUS OTHER DEPARTMENTS (e.g A MEDICINE RESIDENT DOING DUTIES IN SURGERY OR ORTHO, AS THE HOSPITAL IS SHORT OF RESIDENTS IN OTHER DEPARTMENTS). IF A CANDIDATE COMPLAINTS, THE RMO OR MEDICAL SUPERIDENT COMPLAINS OF THEIR CANCELLING OF DNB SEAT.

    4) THERE IS NO FIXED DAILY TIMINGS AS WELL THEY NUMBER OF NIGHT DUTIES IN A MONTH. MOST INSTITUTES HAVE TIMINGS FROM 8 AM TO 5-6 PM. NIGHT DUTIES ARE GIVEN ACCORDING TO HOSPITAL NEEDS (i.e,7 TO 12 NIGHT DUTIES IN A MONTH). AFTER NIGHT DUTIS THERE IS NO POST-NIGHT DUTY OFF. IT ONLY MEAN THAT A DNB CANDIDATES IS WORKING ALMOST >30 HOURS CONTINUOUSLY WITHOUT ANY REST. YOU YOURSELF CALCULATE THE TIME LEFT FOR STUDIES BY THE STUDENT, IF THIS IS A SITUATION.

    5) WORST OF ALL, THERE IS NO ACADEMICS OR TEACHINGS IN ALMOST ALL HOSPITALS. THE SPECIALST OR TEACHERS OF VARIOUS BRANCHES WORK IN MORE THAN ONE (INFACT MANY) CORPORATE OR PRIVATE HOSPITALS. THEY DON’T HAVE TIME OR THEY ARE LEAST INTERSTED FOR TEACHINGS AND ACADEMICS. SPECIALISTS SIMPLY SAY THAT THEY ARE NOT BENEFITTED. IF YOU BRING THIS TO THE NOTICE OF MANAGEMENT, EVEN THEY ARE HELPLESS. NO BODY GUIDE FOR THESIS. DNB CANDIDATES ARE JUST USED TO WORK AS CLERKS OR AS HOSPITALS NEEDS. IN NIGHT DUTIES, SOME TIMES THEY ARE WITHOUT THEIR SENIORS ON CALL. DNB CANDIDATES ARE THE POOR SUFFERER.

    6) IF THE CANDIDATE EVER ASK FOR ATTENDING A LECTURE OR SEMINAR OR CLASS WHICH IS GOING ON IN OTHER MEDICAL COLLEGE OR CONFERENCE; THE HOSPITALS AUTHORITY DONOT GIVE PERMISSION FOR THE SAME. THEY ONLY SAY WHO WILL WORK IN THE HOSPITAL.

    7) SOME INSTITUTES DONOT GIVE FULL STIFEND AS PER BOARD RULES.

    8) LAST AND THE MOST IMPORTANT, DNB FINAL TO CLEAR IS NOT SO EASY. PASS % IS 10-25.

have done my DMRD from government college and DNB TRAINING from private hospital.. Dear, there is exploitation in government college too...there they have power to pass you ...so YOU HAVE TO BE SLAVES OF PROFESSORS...here in private hospital...just pass 3 years quitely...get your thesis signed by consultant...and just say bye to damn hospital....at least they dont have power to pass you.. i think exploiattion is less than government colleges
  24. Dear Dr. Asha

    In reply to your post---

A broad outline of the course curriculum & syllabus(including a logbook for procedures conducted), is given by DNB board, to each accredited hospital, which they are directed to follow religiously.

Well, no one FOLLOWS the recommended curriculum. There is no thesis work, no guidance from the unwilling Guide and no clinical exposure in most of the private DNB hospitals.

We are paid 2500, and made to sign on 8000/-. They also send fake details of money spent on teaching activity. To the funding agency in USA, from where the hospital gets a lot of donation.

    HELLO,

I AGREE THAT ALL HOSPITALS ARE NOT BAD, BECAUSE I DEFINITELY KNOW OF SOME HOSPITALS WHERE THEY GIVE VERY GOOD WORK TO THEIR REGISTERED STUDENTS.

HENCE, BEFORE JOINING ANY HOSPITAL, ONE MUST FIND OUT ABOUT THE REPUTATION OF THE HOSPITAL AS WELL AS THE PARTICULAR PG TEACHER UNDER WHOM THE STUDENT IS SUPPOSED TO WORK.HAVING JOINED ONCE, NOONE IS ALLOWED TO CHANGE THE HOSPITAL LATER.

    8) DNB in a premire hospital in northeast India-----In this hospital DNB,s are treated as slave. There is no teaching enviroment in the hospital. Authority employs students whereever they wants. Though DNB inspector visited the hospital recently & objected many things ,finally end result is same. I heard from 1 of the hospital staff that our authority buyed the ispector.
Accoding to me all what are published in DNB curicculum are bgs.

changing the name to MS/MD(nbe) can be one of the solutions

    friends

coz DNB is not a degree everybody is aware of, we face negligence and ignorance, althogh the exam is more tough to pass than any MD/MS final exam.

We should demand for real equivalency. If am MS/MD passed candidate can get a degree named DNB without doing any extra house jobs why cant a DNB candidate be allowed vice versa?

    HELLO SRINIVAS,

DNB MEDICINE IS DIFFICULT, NO DOUBT, BUT IF THE STUDENT IS SINCERE & HARDWORKING & THOROUGH IN WORK, IT SHOULD NOT BE TOO DIFFICULT, TO PASS THE EXAM IN 1-2 ATTEMPTS!BESIDES, NOT ONLY CAN YOU DO PRIVATE PRACTICE OR A TEACHING JOB, BUT YOU CAN ALSO GO FOR SUPERSPECIALIZATION THEREAFTER!SO IF YOU'RE GETTING A SEAT, PLEASE DON'T LEAVE IT!

THE LIST OF DNB-ACCREDITED HOSPITALS IS GIVEN ON DNB WEBSITE.

  41. Dear Drs,

I am a senior DNB qualified teacher in one of the teaching Govt. Hospitals. Teaching is a matter of Personal interest and motivation. What is the use if one is a teacher and offers only Lip service. Even classes can become uninteresting if there is no dedication on the part of teachers. This is what i have observed in so many specialities. There are very good teachers on Private side too. One has to find out .Pg students attend classes conducted by some of the private hospitals early mornings or late nights if you want knowledge. PG teaching is like GURU-CHELA relationship which is true in Medical subjects. So do not get dejected.Form a group and start your search for a good teacher. Atleast for now there are many who teach for free still in our field.

i will write down my own experiences of the DNB fraud ......
i paid a sum of 1.5 lakhs under the table to get the DNB radiology in the bhopal medicalenter.
    it is a cheat.
the doctors are treated like cattle, made to sit in a cramped room of 6 feet by sic feet.
even crappy managers are allowed to abuse the docs.
    their inefficinecy on docs!
stipend of 3000 with reciept of 10000.
    NO ACEDEMICS WHAT SO EVER.
    NO LIBRARY.
    NO PLATES.
MBBS students learn from DMRD candidates! no guide for thesis.
students get ready made thsis becuase no way out.
i left my DNB months after joining it seeing the dismal prospects.
DNB seat had been ther ein the bhopal medicla center for years but not a single cadidate eithe rMBBS or DMRD had cleared.
how could they? with no acedemics?
the propritor of the bhopal medicla cente ris a shrewd bussiness man with many busisnesses and no medicla background what so ever.
when i lefty my seat i asked my money back which they did not give.
they instaed sold the seat to another candidate in 2 lakhs!

now after a hiatus of many years ( marriage, pregnancy and child birth)
im again gearing up for AIPPG, i can join a DNB starigth away but i dont want to repat the mistake.

i know at age 32 , mothe rof a small baby girl, everyone woudl probably laugh at me for even hoping i can clear AIPPG. but i really want to give it one last and one best try. if i fail i wuld join MHA. but never DNB again.

what ever else i do , i would NEVER join the great DNB fraud again.
