Is taking a dnb seat in a teaching institute better com[pared to waiting to get MD/MS OR PG Diploma?
  2. DNB

    GK,

DNB & MD/MS ARE EQUIVALENT AS FAR AS THE DEGREES ARE CONCERNED, PARTICULARLY WHEN YOU ARE TRYING FOR JOB/PROMOTION IN THE LONG RUN.

AS I'VE STATED IN MY EARLIER POSTS, DNB REGISTRATION IS POSSIBLY EASIER TO GET THAN M.D/M.S, BUT IS HARDER TO PASS!THE ADVANTAGE IS THAT ALL DNB COURSES ARE RECOGNISED ALLOVER INDIA, WHILE ALL M.D/M.S COURSES ARE NOT RECOGNISED IN ALL STATES.

SO IF YOU ARE GETTING DNB IN A GOOD HOSPITAL IN YOUR OWN CITY OR ELSEWHERE, IN A BRANCH THAT YOU WANT, PLEASE TAKE IT UP INSTEAD OF WAITING FOR M.D/M.S!

I JUST POSTED AN AD FROM YASHODA SUPERSPECIALITY HOSPITAL ABOUT DNB, A FEW DAYS BACK.YOU CAN FIND OUT ABOUT OTHER RECOGNISED HOSPITALS FROM THE DNB WEBSITE:

the fact posted by dr asha are relevant, but as you can see from her reply that MD / MS is difficult to get isnt it, and it is so bcos they are more valuable that DNB. Any tom dik and harry does DNB in anything and anywhere. So spend an extra year studying for MD entrance and do MD/MS. DNB is a big racket
  4. DNB VERSUS M.D/M.S

    HELLO,

I DO NOT AGREE WITH THE PREVIOUS REPLY THAT DNB IS DONE BY ANY TOM, DICK & HARRY BECAUSE M.D/M.S IS MORE VALUABLE!

BOTH HAVE THEIR OWN ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES, BUT IF ONE GETS A DNB SEAT IN A SUBJECT THAT ONE LIKES, WHY SHOULD HE/SHE WAIT FOR AIPGMEE OR PGMCET EXAMS WHICH TAKE PLACE JUST ONCE A YEAR? A BIRD IN HAND IS WORTH TWO IN THE BUSH!

BESIDES, WHEN THE ENTIRE EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM IS BECOMING A BIG RACKET(WHETHER WE ADMIT IT OR NOT),WHY SINGLE OUT DNB?IN FACT, THEIR STANDARD IS VERY GOOD & THAT'S ONE OF THE MAIN REASONS WHY ITS DIFFICULT FOR MOST STUDENTS TO PASS THEIR EXAMS AS EASILY AS THE M.D/M.S EXAMS!I'VE HEARD OF ENOUGH CORRUPTION & LEAKAGE OF PAPER FOR AIPGMEE EXAMS OR STATE MEDICAL CETS & EVEN M.D/M.S EXAMS FOR THAT MATTER, IN THE PAST!

  6. DNB

    HELLO,

I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD PASS PRIMARY DNB EXAM & STRAIGHTAWAY ENROLL FOR DNB IN RADIOLOGY OR PEDIATRICS, WHATEVER YOU WISH TO DO.
I HONESTLY FEEL THAT THIS WILL BE BETTER THAN DOING DIPLOMA FIRST & THEN DNB, WHICH WILL ANYWAY HAVE TO BE IN THE SAME SUBJECT, I.E, RADIOLOGY OR PEDIATRICS RESPECTIVELY.

  8. DNB

    HELLO,

THERE ARE QUITE A MANY INSTITUTIONS IN THE SOUTH, WHICH ARE ADVERTISING DNB IN VARIOUS SUBJECTS RECENTLY.I MYSELF HAVE POSTED A COUPLE OF SUCH ADS, ABOUT SUCH POSTS, IN SEVERAL HOSPITALS, IN BANGALORE, HYDERABAD, CHENNAI ETC, IN THIS FORUM EARLIER.THE LATEST AD THAT I HAD POSTED WAS ABOUT SOLAPUR IN MAHARASHTRA.

ONE CAN ALWAYS TRY SOMEWHERE, EVEN IF ONE FEELS THAT ONE REQUIRES SOME PULL, FOR GETTING A DNB ADMISSION, IN A REPUTED HOSPITAL.SOMETIMES, ONE MAY BE LUCKY & GET SOMETHING TOTALLY UNEXPECTEDLY!

DNB IN ANY SUBJECT, IS ALWAYS BETTER THAN DIPLOMA.IF YOU HAVE CLEARED THE PRIMARY DNB EXAM, YOU DON'T EVEN HAVE TO DO DIPLOMA AT ALL, IN THE CONCERNED SUBJECT.

BESIDES, DNB IS CONSIDERED TO BE EQUIVALENT TO M.D/M.S IN THE RESPECTIVE SUBJECT,WHETHER ITS FOR GETTING A JOB, A PROMOTION OR FURTHER SPECIALISATION.

  10. DNB

    HELLO,

IF YOU ARE GETTING A RECOGNISED DCH SEAT & HAVE NOT APPEARED FOR DNB PRIMARY EXAM YET, TAKE THE DCH SEAT STRAIGHTAWAY.

YOU CAN ALWAYS DO DNB FINAL IN PAEDIATRICS THEREAFTER, WITH A SHORTER 2 YEARS COURSE, WITHOUT HAVING TO DO THE PRIMARY DNB AT ALL.

  12. DNB

    HELLO,

IT DEPENDS ON WHETHER YOU HAVE TO SIGN A BOND FOR DCH, PLUS WHETHER YOU'LL BE ABLE TO PAY FOR THE SAME,LEAVE ALONE GETTING BLACKLISTED, IF YOU GIVE UP THE SEAT.IF THAT'S A PROBLEM, WAIT FOR A DNB SEAT RIGHTAWAY.SO MANY ADS ARE COMING UP FOR DNB ADMISSIONS AT VARIOUS PLACES IN INDIA, SO THERE'S A GOOD CHANCE THAT YOU'LL GET ADMISSION SOMEWHERE.AFTER ALL, DNB IN PAEDIATRICS IS CERTAINLY BETTER THAN DCH, AT ANY GIVEN TIME.

IF YOU STILL DON'T GET DNB IN 6 MONTHS, PERHAPS YOU CAN TAKE UP DCH, IF THAT'S AVAILABLE THEN.IN THE MEANWHILE, DO SOME UNREGISTERED POST IN PAEDIATRICS SO THAT YOU GET EXPERIENCE & CONFIDENCE FOR FUTURE PRIVATE PRACTICE.

  15. M.D/M.S/PG DIPLOMA OR DNB?

    HELLO,

ALL STATES TAKE A SIGNED BOND FROM A CANDIDATE THAT HE/SHE WILL NOT LEAVE THE COURSE, AFTER HAVING ACCEPTED IT IN THE FIRST PLACE, BECAUSE THEN THAT PARTICULAR SEAT IS WASTED.SO IF YOU LEAVE THE COURSE MIDWAY, YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT AMOUNT WHICH IS MENTIONED ON THE BOND AGREEMENT.

ABOUT DMRD, ITS NOT SUFFICIENT TO GET A JOB IN A PRESTICIOUS HOSPITAL, AS M.D/DNB PASSED RADIOLOGY CANDIDATES WOULD BE CERTAINLY PREFERRED TO THE DIPLOMA.

  17. M.D/M.S/PG DIPLOMA OR DNB?

    HELLO,

IF THE DMRD IS ONLY RECOGNISED BY MMC(MAHARASHTRA) & NOT BY MCI, IT WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR DOING PRIVATE PRACTICE IN ANY OTHER STATE NOR FOR GETTING A JOB IN UP.

HENCE IT WILL BE BETTER FOR YOU NOW, TO DO EITHER M.D RADIOLOGY, OR DNB RADIOLOGY, WHICH IS RECOGNISED ALLOVER INDIA, EVEN IF YOU HAVE DONE YOUR DMRD FROM MAHARASHTRA.

Well it is a big racket, sorry state of affairs of the whole medical system in india, well if you get an MD or MS do it, it is always better than a DNB which you can do in any hospital which has money to get people from delhi to assess their hospital. MD or an MS your training will be more structured. i dont think there are many DNB institutes offering good training especially surgical
If u doa DNB yu will be like this doc who si desperately trying to defend DNB
    DNB
tell me why was there a need for such adegree in the first place
what are people doing in delhi managing training in the states
as always it is a theoritical test and one who is good passes it
  21. DNB versus M.D/M.S

    Hello,

If your comment is aimed at me, I accept the challenge.

I don't agree with your argument about DNB versus M.D/M.S, but that doesn't mean at all, that I disrespect M.D/M.S!After all, I myself am M.D Medicine & have been a PG teacher & an Examiner for the same in Bombay University till I retired, so I know the quality of Training & Examination of the same.

Till recently, DNB board was allowing M.D/M.S candidates to simultaneously appear for DNB as well, without even writing a separate Thesis/Dissertation.For a short span of time, till recently, they had stopped the Major Teaching Hospitals from enrolling DNB candidates, if they were conducting M.D/M.S courses.

Now that rule has been changed since August 2005.So if there are PG Teachers as well as adequate facilities to train DNB students, in addition to M.D/M.S students, the Major Teaching Hospitals can do so, provided that the 1:1 ratio between teacher:student is maintained.

This new rule is advantageous to our PG students, who have not got admission through All India PG-MEE or State Level PGM-CET.Any seat which is unfilled or has fallen vacant by someone's leaving, after the cutoff date of 31.5. 2006, which is given by M.C.I, can therefore be filled up by a DNB student in that branch. It is equally good for the concerned hospitals, who get that many working hands!

Both M.D/M.S & DNB courses are considered equivalent for jobs, promotions, admission to further studies like Superspecialities etc & have specific guidelines about postings, rotations in allied branches, thesis, log-book & so on.They are inspected by M.C.I & DNB board from time to time to see if the rules are followed properly by the concerned hospitals.

I am stating these things as far as major teaching hospitals are concerned, as I have seen these things myself.I have seen many excellent Private Hospitals allover India, where good coaching/ training is given for DNB, Medicine & its Specialities /Superspecialities. I am sure that the same applies for Surgical branches too.

So, lets not blame any hospital simply because its a Private Hospital! One cannot generalise such statements, though of course, there maybe black sheep everywhere, in public hospitals as well as private hospitals. After all, basic human nature remains the same everywhere!

    , Sir, -
    ~
I am directed to say that this Ministry vide letter of even number dated 17trn \!~
August, 2004 communicated its decision that the medical institutions in the countryr ~'i!
running post-graduate/super-speciality courses permitted /recognized as per MC. ~::"
norms, are permitted to run DNB programmes provided they have additional faculty to ~
train DNB candidates. The position was also reiterated vide letter dated 19th
September, 2005 addressed to various Health/Medical Education Secretaries of all the
States/UTs to admit DNB trainees in various PG/super-speciality courses provided they
have additional faculty since it was brought to our notice that the medical colleges are
not being able to start the DNB courses even though they had additional faculty. This
was primarily with a view to ensuring optimal utilization of manpower and the clinical
load, which is available in various medical colleges for production of quality manpower.
i This letter was based on MCl's stand in the matter as contained in their letter no.
22(1 )/96-Med/14368 dated 17.9.1996 that it would not have any objection in introducing
DNB courses in medical institutions in the concerned departments provided the PG
teachers of the respective departments admitting students under them for
MD/MS/DM/M.Ch. courses may not register students under them for DNB courses
    simultaneously.
It has now been brought to our notice that the MCI vide their letter dated
11.11.2005 addressed to various Universities, Directors of Medical Education of all
State Governments/UTs, Secretaries of Health/Medical Education Departments of all
the States etc., interalia, informing them that it may be made sure by them not to
conduct DNB and other parallel courses i.e. CPS etc. in any subject along with
MD/MS/DM/M. Ch./PG Diploma courses wherever the institutions have been
permitted/recognized to conduct MD/MS/DM/M. Ch. and PG diploma courses. It has
also been stated therein that the decision has been taken by the PG Committee and the
0 same has been communicated to all concerned. This is contrary to the stand taken by
this Ministry in this regard.. In this connection, it is also to be stated that any decision
taken by the PG Committee of MCI, including those with regard to the policies, is only
recommendatory in nature and requires the approval of the Council and the
Government. In the present case, if the PG Committee/the Council considered that the

earlier policy of allowing DNB courses to be run parallel to MD/MS etc. in medical
colleges requires any change, the Council should have sent such proposal along with
reasons for the proposed change of their stand to the Government for its consideration
'! .,' particularly when the Central Government have issued instructions to all concerned
i allowing conduct of DNB courses along with MD/MS etc. subject to availability of
    c. . additional faculty. It is pertinent to point out that the copy of the instructions of the
Central Government dated 19.9.2005 was also specifically endorsed to the Acting
C,- President of MCI for their information. Accordingly, MCI may send the
J recommendation of the PG Committee along with detailed reasons for change of their
earlier stand in regard to allowing DNB courses to be run in medical colleges along with
MD/MS/DM/M.Ch./PG Diploma courses against excess faculty to the Government for

Issue of this communication dated 11.11.2005 by the MCI directly to various

    Hi Dr Asha,
It would be of great help if you let me know if there is any specific period in a year in which accrediated institutions intake sudents for DNB. ex, June/July or Dec/Jan. How many times a year does the admission process take place, is it once or twice a year. I am presently in Uk and thinking of shifting back to India. I have cleared my CET1. It will be of much help for me if I know these details to make further decisions.
    Warm regards,

  29. DNB COURSE

    ALDO,

DNB ADMISSIONS TAKE PLACE TWICE A YEAR, AROUND THE MONTHS OF JULY-AUGUST & AROUND JANUARY-FEBRUARY.

AS YOU HAVE ALREADY CLEARED DNB-CET, YOU CAN ALWAYS JOIN THE REGULAR DNB COURSE AT ANY TIME, SINCE THERE IS NO TIME LIMIT FOR THAT, AFTER CLEARING THE DNB PRIMARY EXAM.

AS YOU ARE ABROAD AT PRESENT, PERHAPS JANUARY 2007 OR JULY 2007, WILL BE PERFECTLY OK FOR YOU, TO JOIN THE COURSE.

    HI,

YOU MUST HAVE AN INTERNSHIP COMPLETION CERTIFICATE BEFORE YOU CAN APPEAR FOR DNB-CET NOWADAYS, THOUGH IT WAS POSSIBLE DURING FINAL M.B.B.S EARLIER.

MAYBE YOU CAN APPEAR FOR DNB PRIMARY IN JUNE/DECEMBER 2007, IF YOUR INTERNSHIP GETS OVER BY THEN.

  33. DNB IN CLINICAL SUBJECT VS M.D FORENSIC MEDICINE

    DR.SACHIN,

IT DEPENDS ON YOUR BASIC INTEREST IN THE SUBJECTS THAT YOU'VE MENTIONED.FORENSIC MEDICINE HAS EXCELLENT PROSPECTS AS THERE ARE VERY FEW QUALIFIED PEOPLE IN THAT BRANCH.

IF YOU'RE SO KEENLY INTERESTED IN A PARTICULAR CLINICAL SUBJECT & HAVE CLEARED THE DNB-CET ALREADY, YOU CAN CERTAINLY TRY FOR THE SAME.

HOWEVER, PLEASE REMEMBER THAT YOU'LL BE BLACKLISTED BY THE M.D/M.S FORUM IN THE PROCESS!

BESIDES, THOUGH DNB IS DEFINITELY CONSIDERED TO BE EQUIVALENT TO M.D/M.S, ITS PASSING RATE IS MUCH LOWER THAN THESE EXAMS, AS DNB EXAMS HAVE VERY HIGH STANDARDS.

    HI,

IF DMRD IS MCI-RECOGNIZED, YOU CAN DO DNB RADIOLOGY WITHIN
2 YEARS, WITHOUT A PRIOR DNB-CET.HOWEVER, IF YOU WISH TO DO YOUR DNB RADIOLOGY DIRECTLY, AS WELL AS IF THE DMRD IS NOT MCI-RECOGNIZED, YOU'LL HAVE TO DO DNB-CET FIRST & THEN, DNB RADIOLOGY COURSE WILL BE FOR 3 YEARS.

Well, You guys may not agree with me.
But tell me one reson why DNB should be considered at Par with MD/MS.
All the doctors after graduation slog to get an MD/MS/Diploma and not DNB. Those who FAIL in the entrance exams turn to DNB and other similar degrees (like CPS and FCPS in Maharashtra). So, When you guys know that you failed in those exams which could fetch you MD/MS/Diploma and those who were much superior or better than you guys got MD/MS/Diploma, then how can you even think of considering yourself equivalent to MD/MS/Diploma holders. They are much superior to you. Forget MD/MS, even diploma candidates are much superior to you guys.

    Respected dr. asha,
can u pls tell me which is the best place to do dnb in family medicine n what is the scope for it in india.
    thank u. :)
  43. DNB COURSES

    HI,

I DON'T AT ALL AGREE WITH YOU THAT DNB IS INFERIOR TO MD/MS!IN FACT, IT IS A MUCH TOUGHER EXAM THAN MD/MS IN THAT RESPECTIVE BRANCH!SO IF THE HEALTH MINISTRY HAS ALREADY GIVEN ITS PERMISSION, TO CONSIDER IT AS EQUIVALENT TO MD/MS IN THAT BRANCH, I REALLY FAIL TO UNDERSTAND AS TO WHY ANYONE SHOULD OBJECT TO THAT POLICY!

YOU ARE PERHAPS IGNORANT, ABOUT THE WAY MANY MD/MS COURSES ARE CONDUCTED, IN SOME PARTS OF INDIA! I'VE HEARD FROM VARIOUS RELIABLE SOURCES, THAT INSTEAD OF DOING THE WORK OF A RESIDENT, THESE DOCTORS ARE MADE TO RUN ERRANDS AT THE RESIDENCE OF THE BOSS!

ANOTHER THING, WHICH IS QUITE A BIG SHAME TO OUR COUNTRY IN GENERAL & TO THE MEDICAL/TECHNICAL FRATERNITY IN PARTICULAR, IS THE WAY THE PAPERS LEAK OUT AT VARIOUS COMPETITIVE TESTS, INCLUDING ALL INDIA ENTRANCE EXAMS, THANKS TO OUR IMPROVED TECHNOLOGICAL METHODS, LIKE PEN-SCANNER ETC! YOU MUST HAVE HEARD OF IT LAST YEAR, WHERE AT A PARTICULAR CENTRE, THE QUESTIONS WERE SCANNED BY SUPERVISORS, SENT BY SMS TO A GROUP OF EXAMINERS WITHIN A RANGE OF 50 KMS, WHO IN TURN, SOLVED THEM & SENT BACK THE ANSWERS TO THESE MCQS, WHICH WERE CONVEYED BACK TO CERTAIN(!) STUDENTS BY SMS!

IN THE PROCESS, MANY DESERVING CANDIDATES ARE UNABLE TO GET THE COURSE OF THEIR CHOICE! BESIDES, I'VE ALSO HEARD FROM RELIABLE SOURCES, THAT THERE'S A HIGH LEVEL RACKET AT SOME OF THESE EXAMS, WHEREIN THE COMPUTER IS USED, TO EXCHANGE MARKS, BETWEEN TWO CONSECUTIVE CANDIDATES!LEAVE ALONE THAT, SOME GREAT CANDIDATES ARE EVEN GIVEN THE SPECIAL(!) BENEFIT OF APPEARING FOR EXAM IN BASEMENT, WITH SUPERVISORS EVEN DICTATING THE ANSWERS TO THEM!

THE POINT THAT I'M TRYING TO MAKE IS THAT THERE ARE BLACK SHEEP EVERYWHERE, SO ITS NOT AS IF ALL DNB CANDIDATES ARE ALWAYS EXCELLENT, OR THAT ALL MD/MS CANDIDATES ARE ALWAYS BAD, OR VICE VERSA! EACH SYSTEM CERTAINLY HAS ITS OWN ADVANTAGES & DISADVANTAGES, SO ULTIMATELY IT IS UPTO THE STUDENT, TO PROGRESS IN HIS/HER KNOWLEDGE & IN CAREER!NOWADAYS, THERE ARE SO MANY OTHER COURSES, APART FROM MEDICAL & ENGINEERING, SO WHY NOT TRY FOR THOSE AS CAREER?

    DR.A.J.PAIDHUNGAT.
  44. DNB COURSES

    DR.ASRANNA,

PLEASE CHECK ON THE DNB WEBSITE,(www.natboard.nic.in), UNDER THE DNB-CET INFORMATION BULLETIN, REGARDING THE ACCREDITED INSTITUTES THAT ARE CONDUCTING THE DNB COURSE IN FAMILY MEDICINE.YOU MAY ALSO LOOK UP THE PLACES WHERE VACANCIES FOR DNB FAMILY MEDICINE ARE EXISTING JUST NOW, BECAUSE EVERY YEAR, BY JULY/AUGUST, & BY JANUARY/FEBRUARY, PEOPLE JOIN THE VARIOUS DNB COURSES & IT IS POSSIBLE THAT THERE MAYBE SOME VACANCIES AVAILABLE STILL, IF YOU ARE LUCKY.

FAMILY MEDICINE-NEW REGULATIONS(NR), IS A GOOD COURSE FOR OUR COUNTRY, BECAUSE WE NEED MORE FAMILY PHYSICIANS.IF EVERYONE RUNS AFTER SUPERSPECIALISATION, DEVELOPING A LIMITED, TUBULAR VISION IN THE PROCESS, WHO WILL LOOK AT THE PATIENT'S PROBLEM AS A WHOLE?BESIDES, AFTER DNB FAMILY MEDICINE, ONE CAN DO DNB COURSES IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE, GERATRICS ETC.

ONE ADVANTAGE OF FAMILY MEDICINE IS THAT YOU ARE ROTATED IN ALL BRANCHES, LIKE MEDICINE, SURGERY, OBGYNAEC, PEDIATRICS, ETC, OVER A PERIOD OF 3 YEARS.THERE IS A SMALL THESIS THAT ONE CAN DO ON A SUBJECT LIKE A COMMON INFECTION, SAY TB, AIDS, ETC.BESIDES, THERE'S NO NEED FOR A PRIOR DNB-CET FOR THIS COURSE.THE FEE IS RS.50,000/- PER YEAR & THE STIPEND IS RS.10,000-12,000PM OVER THE 3 YEARS OF RESIDENCY.

dear dr asha i have a query to make . it will be very kind of you to reply. maam i m getting a dnb orthopaedics seat in a hospital which has had 7 dnb courses already running but they are starting dnb ortho this year itself. maam what i wanted to ask is
    1) should i take up the seat
    2) if i leave the seat in case after joining will i have to opt for(ie clear)cet againfor applying to another branch for dnb.
3)i have heard that pass% for dnb ortho final is shockingly low for those who do ortho directly after mbbs . is it true or there are other factors to it.i am very frightened abt.this part.
4)how much time is given for clearing dnb finals. if one is unable to do it in 1st . attempt

    thanks in advance maam.

    MUKAND,

IT IS NICE TO HEAR THAT YOU ARE GETTING DNB ORTHO IN A GOOD HOSPITAL THIS YEAR.IF IT IS CONFIRMED THAT THE HOSPITAL IS ACCREDITED FOR THIS PARTICULAR DNB COURSE, PLEASE JOIN IT.

ABOUT LEAVING THE COURSE INBETWEEN, I THINK THAT YOU GET BLACKLISTED IF YOU DO SO, UNLESS YOU HAVE SOME VALID REASON LIKE ILLHEALTH OR ABSOLUTELY SEVERE DOMESTIC DIFFICULTY. HENCE, THINK PROPERLY & THEN JOIN THE COURSE ACCORDINGLY.

DNB EXAMS ARE TOUGH, BECAUSE THEY MAINTAIN A CERTAIN STANDARD, SO PLEASE BE PREPARED FOR A SECOND ATTEMPT.

DNB IS CONSIDERED TO BE EQUIVALENT TO MD/MS BY HEALTH MINISTRY, BUT MCI IS NOT ALLOWING BOTH COURSES TO BE CONDUCTED IN ANY HOSPITAL SIMULTANEOUSLY.

ALL THESE DETAILS ARE GIVEN ON THE DNB WEBSITE:-

    Hi madam,
The national board website mentions regarding the post diploma DNB, that it should be recognised by MCI/University inorder to take up a 2 year DNB course without taking the Primary exam. What does this mean. Is it sufficient if the diploma is recognised by the university alone and and not by the MCI. Would it be possible to take a 2 year DNB course without Part 1 exam if the diploma is recognised by the university alone and not by the MCI?
    Kindly reply,
    Regards
